I was given some Yellow Onion seeds, and some Green Onion seeds this Spring. I've never tried to grow onions before. I put the seeds in pots, planning to put them in the ground later. That plan didn't happen, so they are still in pots. The plants in this pot don't look very happy, and neither do the green onions. I don't know if I gave them too much water or not enough. I tried to keep the soil moist. Any idea why these onions are not happy? Is it just because they are in a pot instead of in the ground? Also, how do you know when they are ready to harvest?
The yellow onions should still be growing and starting to form bulbs at this time. Yours are clearly dead, possibly from overwatering. Does the pot have drainage holes and good potting soil? The green onions are still very small. How long ago were they sowed? The yellow onions should be harvested after the bulbs are fully developed and the tops are getting brown and falling over. Green onions can be harvested any time they are large enough.
Harvest yellow ones immediately! Then check every bulb, if it is soft or hard. Separate hard bulbs and let them dry in a warm and dry space preferably with a good airflow. Then you should get some onion sets for planting next spring.
If all your yellow onion bulbs are soft, then probably some pest infection (onion fly etc) happened. Discard all the soft stuff. Green onions look pretty good to me. Onion is rather sensitive to overwatering, but it does not tolerate long drought too, at this growing stage. Too much direct sun could be also dangerous at their very early age (plenty of direct sun is needed from the current stage and onwards). Onion needs a lot of direct sun for creating a bulb, if planted too tight, they would suffer. I would not plant onion (for getting a bulb) any closer each other than 10 cm in the row and 15 cm between rows, green onions can be planted more tightly. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet. They should improve soon, if conditions are right. Fertilize as soon as you see, that they start rapid growth. I checked your past weather, you had some hot days (above +30 C), your yellow onions could get too hot in the pot on these days. Then all the bulbs are probably soft.
