I would think there would be some environmental impact from the mushroom hunting activity yet there is no mention of it. I wonder how that's possible. Perhaps people in that part of the world is more aware of the problem and is thus more careful and respectful.

Well, your quote does say "It's a protected landscape...". I didn't pick up on anything saying how it's protected.

Wow, what an interesting article to me, because of my Lithuanian heritage. My Lithuanian is limited, but I recognized some of the mushroom names and even noticed that they misspelled Baravykas, the Lithuanian name for Boletus edulis.

One reason why they find so many varieties of edible mushrooms is that they eat any that are remotely edible. In Missouri, where I grew up, My mother used to pick all of the Russulas that she encountered, mostly red ones. She would boil them in water and throw the water out. Unfortunately, one day she picked so many Russulas that they filled the pot, leaving little room for water. We all got sick from eating them, but at least it was only gastric upset.

Another interesting thing is their attitude toward picking mushrooms in parks. Here, it's not allowed; but there, you can pick and even sell mushrooms from a park. And it doesn't seem to hurt their productivity.
