[Fleetwood Park] Two 'Akebono' trees stand near the labyrinth. This path, named "Cherry Walk," is lined with 'Rancho' trees that are about 50% in bloom. This one is being overtaken by the rootstock. :(
One of my favourites! Thanks. That's probably as nice a 'Rancho' display as you can get, but it seems that there was plenty of room to use trees that have a wider spread, or use low-grafted trees. I've made it a Festival Favourite anyway.
[94 Ave, East of 152 St] 'Akebono' [154 St & 94 Ave] This long L-shaped cul-de-sac is lined with about 30 mature 'Akebono' trees.
[Bear Creek Park] One large 'Akebono' near the east parking lot. Both photos are of the same tree, taken from different angles. All four young ‘Akebono’ trees by the swimming pool show multiple band-like scars on the trunk. The graft line and old staking marks?? Two 'Akebono' and one 'Shirotae' by the playground. 'Shirotae' still has more buds than open blooms.
[156 St & 101 Ave] The single 'Shirotae' isn’t very noticeable on this street, but its flowers are quite showy when seen up close. [101 Ave & 159 St] These 8 'Rancho' trees are nearing the end of their bloom.
[8103 & 8106 158 St] Two 'Beni-Shidare' trees face each other across the street. [158 St, between 83 Ave & 84 Ave] ‘Akebono’ trees line the west side of these two blocks.
[Fleetwood Park] One 'Shirotae' beside the tennis court. [103a Ave & 152a St] These two 'Shirotae' trees look like they’re in large box planters.
I got to check these out again. The trees are outside the neighbour's fence, so are on city property. There are three 'Accolade' and an 'Akebono'. The two 'Accolade' that have trunks going straight into the ground with no roots showing have 'Accolade' suckers. On this tree with the roots visible, I can't tell if the suckers are 'Accolade' or Prunus avium, or maybe even something else. The 'Akebono' has a LOT of suckers in two clumps, and they're all the same as what's on the tree.
@Willard and I were pretty sure we came across the best 'Ichiyo' pair ever, on 64th Ave east of 188th Street. We were on our way to Langley, on a route devised by google. These photos were taken by Shirley. Here's the winter colour on google maps in November 2020. A late winter google maps image from March 2023 reveals how much they have been pruned. These might be on their own roots, or are at least bottom grafted. Both trees have a lovely structure. These photos are mine.
Just around the corner from the very fine ‘Ichiyo’ pair in the previous post, Wendy spotted this big old ‘Kanzan’. Bigger than the house, and outgrowing its yard, too. Loaded.
Next door to the 'Ichiyo' above is one 'Shirotae'. I think we saw these three 'Shiro-fugen' flanking the entrance to The Heights on 64th Ave around 190th Street when we decided to turn around to have a look at the 'Ichiyo'. The single tree on the right of the entrance is considerably ahead of the West End in their blooming.
South Cambie Interesting note about 'Ichiyo' usually occurring in pairs. I actually didn't know that was the perception! This one has been in my neighbourhood for a long time as a solo tree. I guess it's another myth-buster! [15619 102b Ave]
This 'Ukon' is already close to the end of its bloom, showing the characteristic pink flush. In previous years, I haven't seen it reach this stage until the end of the month. The season is definitely moving fast. [15657 102b Ave] Even though they are not ornamental cherry, these sweet cherry trees deserve mention for being so plentiful, straight, tall, and eye-catching. Interesting observation: the tree by the road is spread wide, but the ones behind it are very straight and very tall. [156 St 102b Ave]
'Kanzan' [102b Ave & 157 St] And, the magical two-tone 'Kanzan' trees across from each other. [156 St & 101 Ave]
