The mighty 'Yae-beni-shidare' on the south side of W. 24th, between Laurel and Willow, is in bloom at March 31, 2026. Not quite full bloom, as there are still lots of buds. You can just make out the pubescent pedicels in the last photo, as befitting the subhirtella ("somewhat hairy") in its name.
The 'Ukon' trees on both sides of Baillie, W. 37–39, are in bloom at April 8, 2026. Compare the 'Ukon' blooms on Baillie, which are on the fair-skin side, with those on E. 15th, with their greenish complexion (Renfrew #248)
Since VanDusen chopped down its 'Jo-nioi' last year, it's a relief to see that Vancouver's only other tree is still on the grounds of the old RCMP headquarters, despite said grounds being under remodelling.
The site is in construction. Currently only lower portion is blooming, the upper portion of the tree is still in buds.
Thanks to Cherry Scout Kimiyo Kamimura for putting me on to this big beautiful 'Ichiyo' so nicely situated on it lot on 17th at Tupper. This breaks our understanding that 'Ichiyo' always occur in pairs.
These 'Kanzan' on 19th between Cambie and Tupper have had a map marker with no photo since forever. It will soon have this photo. Here's another group, very visible on West 16th across Oak Street while waiting for the light, travelling west.
The 'Ama-no-gawa' trees are still standing guard by their building on the NW corner of King Edward and Ash; past peak bloom at April 18, 2026.
Just north of the 'Ama-no-gawa' trees, at the SE corner of Ash and W. 24th, it's a bicolour 'Shiro-fugen' in bloom at April 18, 2026.
