Proposed name changes to Acacia by Bruce Maslin of the Department of Conservation and Land Management, Perth, Western Australia, discusses a conservative approach to the impending nomenclatural shift surrounding Acacia and related genera. If the suggestions put forth by Bruce Maslin and colleagues are not followed, almost a fifth of Australia's species of vascular plants (nearly 1000 species) will need to be renamed - a large task, with many ramifications. What I also find interesting is that the story's introduction mentions that discussion about the name changes is mentioned in the popular press (the Sydney Morning Herald). While I hope a name change that affected 20% of Canada's flora would merit a mention in newspapers, I wouldn't wager any money on it.
