I'm posting this for appreciation, but I'm also curious to know what kind of squash it is. After our Thanksgiving dinner, I took my friends to see this plant growing from a third floor balcony above the Safeway grocery store. It reaches to the ground now. Leaves are around 60cm across. There are not many fruits yet, though there are several flowers. The only developing fruit of any size looks marked like a zucchini, but my friend said it's not that. [Edited: I added "plant" to the title - it's the plant itself that's so eye-catching.]

I joined another West End group on Facebook to see what the owner of this plant had to say, which was that it's a pumpkin, which grew from a four inch pot. She had a photo of one of the pumpkins, but it's a private group, so there's no point to my linking to it here. I saw it lying in a heap on the sidewalk today, but there is another half its length still there. The owner said " wow! this pumpkin is a celebrity. we noticed it's actually growing 2 big pumpkins so we decided to cut back the leaves so it wouldn't waste too much energy. excited to grow an even bigger vine next year".

Growth of the fruits is of course supported by food manufactured in the leaves via photosynthesis; the leaves don't waste energy, they produce it.
