This bare patch has straight sides all the way round and a hole at one end.
    about 9 inches across.
    wasps?
    no sign of any critters.
    ideas?

I don't know the culprit behind this but perhaps some detective work is in order. How about this: Tie a length of string to a small plastic bag, attach the other end of the string to a stake in the ground outside the hole, then stuff the bag a short distance inside the hole. See if it will be pulled inside or thrown outside. At least it will let you know whether it's a creature you're dealing with.

Great idea! We don't want to trap anything. If we just fill up the hole!
    Thanks

In the last 3 or 4 years, I've noticed these same holes in my garden, usually along the fence or wall. They're freshly dug so the critters are active. Pretty sure they're moles as unfortunately my cat brought one to the front door one year, a lovely little silver creature. I was annoyed by the holes at first but realized they don't interfere very much with my gardening so I've learned to live with my elusive friends.

I wonder if it was actually a mole. Aren't moles brown in color?
