I'm going to attempt to graft Quercus acuta onto Quercus suber.
(Japanese "Red" oak onto cork oak. They are both evergreen)

I have just made 5 grafts onto the tree.

Does anyone have a hypothesis whether the grafts will take?

Quercus acuta is in section "Cyclobalanopsis", while Quercus suber is in section "Cerris".
Though they are both in the oak subgenus [division] "Cerris" rather than the subgenus Quercus. (Section Ilex is also in the subgenus "Cerris", but is more closely related to section Cerris than Cyclobalanopsis is)

Both of these species are evergreen into climate zone 8.

Worth giving it a try. And monitor the results, to see what happens!

    update:
So far it does not look good.
though probably still premature to tell conclusively.

It's got me thinking perhaps I did not attach the grafts as well as I could have. I simply used a knife to scrape both exposed parts and then used tape to tightly bundle the scion twig up against the small branch (which was not much wider than the scion twig). I even wetted it to try to prevent it from drying out.
But this seems to show that it is not easy.
