The in-laws have a small group of trees that appear to be volunteers coming up in their backyard on Saginaw, MI. I’m needing info on what they are to ask if they want them removed and if I want to transplant one or two to my house in Southeast MI. If they are Alder Buckthorn, are they invasive? I’m seeing conflicting info on the Googs. I appreciate any help!
Saginaw, Michigan USA. Very soon the flower buds in your pics will open. Then you will know for sure if it is Frangula alnus...common name alder buckthorn. Be careful many images on www are incorrect. It is concidered an invasive shrub in parts of USA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frangula_alnus Quote wiki.... "Invasive species [edit] Frangula alnus was probably introduced to North America about 200 years ago, and in Canada about 100 years ago. It was planted for hedgerows, forestry plantings, and wildlife habitat, but has become an invasive species, invading forests in the northeastern United States and wetlands and moist forest in the Midwestern United States.[13][14][15] It is predicted to continue to expand its North American range with time.[13] Its invasiveness is assisted by its high adaptability and pollution tolerance." https://www.invasive.org/browse/subinfo.cfm?sub=5649#:~:text=Its rapid growth and prolific, mid 1800s as an ornamental. https://www.naturespot.org/species/alder-buckthorn https://www.techlinenews.com/articles/distinguishing-invasive-buckthorn-from-native-alderleaf-buckthorn.html#:~:text=Alderleaf buckthorn (Rhamnus alnifolia) is,and habitat in North America.
