      <content:encoded><![CDATA[On Saturday I was in the mountains east of Manning Park gathering morels in last year&#039;s Garrison Lake fire area when I came across some beautiful flowers on a ridge top so barren that it didn&#039;t even have enough plant material to burn.  They looked familiar, and I identified them as <i>Lewisia rediviva</i> when I got home.  I have a similar area in the lane border south of our new retaining wall.  I was thinking that these flowers just might grow in this gravel-covered soil poor in organic...<br />

It looks a lot like the ones that are growing in the Camosun Bog, 2 or 3 km north of us. If so, any idea how it could have suddenly appeared here -- that is, how would the seeds have spread if there don&#039;t seem to be any other such plants in the immediate vicinity?]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I&#039;m pretty sure that the hillside where I live would once have been considered a Garry Oak meadow. In the 50 years since houses started being built here and non-native grasses and other plants moved in, the tiny native annuals in particular are seldom seen.<br />
As I find them, I try to eliminate the competition and give them more room to thrive.<br />
Some, like Miner&#039;s Lettuce and Sea Blush, do too well for my liking but I find room for all.<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[In the woods behind my house I have manually cleared out a lot of blackberry and left many of the native plants like salmonberry, trying to give it a chance to take better hold. Two of the salmonberries in the last year or so have died. Large bushes with now just standing dead wood. There are quite a few more that are fine, many have grown quite a bit now that they have more room. <br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[This is growing in Stanley Park. It&#039;s very attractive, yet has a possibly thuggish attitude. <br />
The plant I noticed first is very straight, with only large opposite pinnate leaves growing off the main bole or stem or trunk. There doesn&#039;t seem to be any way for it to get any wider, as there are no side branches, just the compound leaves. <br />

Interestingly, these red galls are not the same the those produced the the Jumping Gall Wasp galls frequently found on Garry Oaks, nor does the wasp look like the wasps growing in those particular galls.]]></content:encoded>
