I've come to be suspicious that maybe there is something wrong with it, because it seems very "leggy" with a great deal of bare branches and seemingly dead twigs and with much of the blossoms and growth very much near the far tips of the tree.

Hi,

I have a cherry blossom variant tree. It used to flower properly till bout 2 years back. Last year, the tree had leaves before it started flowers. I also noticed white deposits on the trunk and leaves (pic attached) and leaves are also strangely garbled (pic below)

would anyone be able to help me with this - I had fed the tree organic fertilizer when I fertilize the rest of my garden plants but nothing beyond that. Any clue ?

The leaves and flowers on the rootstock growth, including the full tree, on this row of 'Shiro-fugen' cherries in Victoria looks like Prunus avium, except that I came across a discussion recently in which I recall something about P. avium not being hairy and the hairs on the tree in question indicated that it would be P. x pugetensis. Would that hybrid be used as a rootstock now? These leaves felt a little fuzzy and it turned out they are very hairy and fuzzy....
With respect to P. serrulata var. spontanea, I could be convinced that many of the unknowns in East Van (500-600 blk E 27, 800 blk E 26, 1100-1200 blk E 13, etc.) are this cherry. I'd like to see whether the leaf back is whitish (which would be a good indicator). The aforementioned are for sure not P. sargentii, as the inflorescences are corymbose, not umbellate—warmer...
