However, I believe we just had our last frost freeze for the year and old man winter is on it's way out

I have a JM - single leader, no real branching. It did flush out from top to bottom with Buds and then they all fizzled out . I left it alone...bark test showed it was alive.
The lower 2/3 has some buds on it. Above that, no buds but it doesn't appear to have died back yet...
What do I do this season. Leave it alone or top it off...
These are grafted trees and I wonder what they use as rootstock in order to ensure survival in zone 4.
I happened to pass by some at a garden center yesterday that have sprung growth from below the graft union and I took a couple photos. I wonder if anyone can tell me what it is - palmatum?...

I spotted two trident maples by the Loire, their trunks about 25-30 cm in diameter, and they have leaves that are a bit different from mine and those I can see in parks around.
Do you think it's because of the place the seeds were from ?

Here is a photo of the seeds I gathered this morning with their leaves on the right, and in the bottom left, a leaf from one I have had in the ground for many years, but which is younger :

I have 10 "Butterfly" maples growing in #1 pots. 9 of them are identical, and look like typical "Butterfly" cultivars, but the 10th maintained it's pink emerging variegation through most of last year, and the leaves stayed quite small (~50 percent of the size of the others).

This year, once again, 9 emerged as expected, and my little Pink Dragon (as I started calling it) looks like a completely different cultivar (see photos below). It is quite a striking tree and more pink than any JM...

Hi all,

Our TMSBI (The Maple Society of Britain and Ireland) youtube channel has a new video: a lovely 10 minute tour of Winkworth arboretum. This is in preparation for our upcoming visit on the 18th Oct 2025. We're also visiting Ramster Gardens and making a return visit to Miles Japanese Maples, to see the new site have a silent auction -- I always come away with some great stuff! -- and tea and cakes. Not to mention a dinner on Saturday and Sunday lunch!...

So I'm based in the UK and got an Acer this year that was tagged as Acer palmatum 'Autumn glory', I thought it was correct because it looks like the Autumn glory that Barthelemy sells. However, I have seen other places where Autumn glory is a totally different tree, like in the book Japanese maples by Gregory and Vertrees or the one Hippopottering sells, where it looks totally different.

I saw there was no post for it under the Acer palmatum cultivars section so thought I would make this...

I don't think there's a thread "Maple bonsai", but some seem to have an interest in the matter, so...

Acer campestre is a good candidate for bonsai, especially for beginners : it's widely available and can take many errors from a neophyte.

What's more, Acer campestre is one of the few maples that can be reproduced by root cutting. Here is an example of mine, this strain of A. c. is a bit different from most of the field maples we can see here or in Britain, it has less divided...
I picked this up at a DiY store half price..it’s tagged Katsura but looks nothing like my 2 mature Katsura’s, that have half the sized leaves compared to this one and the shape of the leaf and colour are different- any ideas please. I couldn’t help myself for just over a tenner!

The leaves are in the larger end of the Palmatum group, are deep green,...
