Human Impact on the Global Ecology

David Suzuki and C.W. Nicol are two of the world's leading environmentalists. Well known for his ability to present tough issues in clear language, Suzuki has written over thirty books and produced award-winning documentaries. Nicol is well respected for his work on conservation issues in his home country, Japan. Reporter, Stephen Hesse recently interviewed the two at Earth Day Tokyo.

Both of the men warned that if humans do not address environmental issues we are likely to face serious economic and political problems in the future. The majority of people are concerned about the natural environment and willing to pay for its protection according to the noted authors, but governments fear damage to the economy from the costs of such measures. Suzuki cites the success of energy saving technological advances made by Japan's auto industry and challenges the nation to lead the world in the development of sustainable solutions to our environmental problems.

Want to talk about this weblog entry? As of August 22, 2006, all new entries and most older entries are cross-posted to the UBC Botanical Garden Discussion Forums for discussion (you might need to use the search function to find the thread you are looking for).

This is an effort to reduce the amount of time spent dealing with spam (the forums are very good at stopping spam, the weblog commenting system is not so good).

Older entries already containing comments remain open for discussion.
