Canada's Plan to Honour Kyoto Commitment
Canada took the first step in honouring its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the release of its plan: Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment. The plan sets forth programs and policies that will maintain Canada's economic competitiveness while incorporating climate change considerations. Measures in the plan should allow Canada to close its greenhouse gas emissions gap by 270 megatonnes by 2012.
The plan builds on earlier policies that promote increased energy efficiency and the development of new energy technologies with the aim of “linking economic prosperity with environmental progress”. This new approach has been supported by the introduction of new market mechanisms, tax measures and incentives for private sector innovation and consumer action.
Along with economic benefits and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, Canadians will experience the advantages of a cleaner environment: greener surroundings, better health and an improved quality of life.
