Committee Report on Royal Botanical Gardens

A report released on April 1, by the Royal Botanical Gardens Review Committee on the status and future of the provincial garden in Ontario has been well received by stakeholders and public officials. The garden has been experiencing financial difficulties and administrators had feared they would have to close the facility. The Review Committee was co-chaired by former Hamilton mayor Robert Wade and regional planning expert David Carter.

The group reviewed input from more than 500 roundtable participants and 170 submissions to produce the 109-page report. Comparison charts with three Canadian gardens and four in the UK and Australia are included in the paper.

Some of the recommendations cited are that the RBG should:

  • established a transition committee to oversee change at the gardens.
  • approach the federal government as a potential a core funder.
  • change its name to the Royal Botanical Gardens of Ontario.
  • be accountable to the Province, the City of Hamilton and Halton Region.
  • embrace the developing role of botanic gardens in biodiversity conservation, environmental education and sustainable development.

The full report is available from the Ontario Ministry of Culture.
