Drylandscope

Drylands encompass about 40% of the earth's land surface. The fragile ecosystems that have developed in these areas, characterized by low annual rainfall and low soil fertility, are particularly prone to degradation. For the people living in these regions sustainable land and water use policies are essential to survival.

Concern about the degradation of drylands has spawned a new organization, Drylandscope, which seeks to be a “central clearinghouse” to share current information on sustainable land use practices in drylands. The group has developed a website featuring a library of current publications and web resources coupled with discussion forums. It is hoped that discussion on the forums will provide a guide for determining the direction of new research and policy in drylands management.
