Kudos for North Carolina Botanical Garden

The North Carolina Botanical Garden, in Chapel Hill, was awarded the 2004 Sustainable Business Award in the nonprofit category, by Sustainable North Carolina, a non-profit agency that promotes sustainable development and conservation in the state. The garden received the award for the design of its future Visitors' Education Centre.

Award-winning architect Frank Harmon designed the LEED Platinum building that will be the new Visitor's Centre. The building will feature “geothermal-supported energy system, photovoltaics to generate electricity and abundant day-lighting” (GNET). All water used for gardens at the site will be collected in cisterns from rainwater runoff.

The Platinum rating is the highest level of certification of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. The rating system is a voluntary standards and certification program developed by USGBC (US Green Building Council) that assesses buildings and construction projects for environmental sustainability based on well-founded scientific standards.

Want to talk about this weblog entry? As of August 22, 2006, all new entries and most older entries are cross-posted to the UBC Botanical Garden Discussion Forums for discussion (you might need to use the search function to find the thread you are looking for).

This is an effort to reduce the amount of time spent dealing with spam (the forums are very good at stopping spam, the weblog commenting system is not so good).

Older entries already containing comments remain open for discussion.
