Visitor Information
What can visitors expect?
Visitors to UBC Botanical Garden can expect a learning experience rich with interesting plants and informative signs. UBC Botanical Garden is also a "hidden gem" of a garden; it is not as widely known as other Vancouver attractions, so visitors can expect a quiet visit away from crowds.
When is the best time to visit?
Vancouver's maritime climate allow plants to be of interest throughout the year, with some plants flowering in December and January. However, for the most impressive floral displays, the months of April and May are particularly good, featuring magnolias, rhododendrons and spring ephemerals. The summer heat brings out the best in the Alpine Garden. September and October are best for viewing autumn colours and harvestable fruits and vegetables in the Food Garden.
How long does it take to tour the garden?
A minimum of one hour is advised. With a brisk walk, this will give an idea of the size and variety of the garden. However, at a leisurely pace, one hour is barely enough time to tour either the Asian Garden or the Alpine Garden.
What visitor facilities are available?
Sandwiches, cookies, ice cream, chips, cold drinks and more are available at the Garden Café. Snacks and refreshments are also available from vending machines. Washroom facilities and drinking water are available at the entrance to the garden and in the garden pavilion beside the Food Garden.
Are pets allowed?
No pets are allowed within the garden. The garden is a research facility. Plant researchers cannot risk the potential destruction of any plants due to an errant pet.
What other attractions are nearby?
With its location on the tip of Point Grey at the University of British Columbia, UBC Botanical Garden is close to many of Vancouver's other stellar attractions. UBC's world-famous Museum of Anthropology is only minutes away (with the Nitobe Memorial Garden directly across the street from it). Downtown Vancouver, Vancouver International Airport, VanDusen Botanical Garden, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden, Granville Island are all less than a half hour away by car.
