Davidson Club

Legacy gift donors are welcomed into the Davidson Club, named in honour of John Davidson, the first Provincial Botanist in Canada and first Director of UBC Botanical Garden. Donors who make a legacy gift ensure that future revenues will be available for the garden.

Davidson Club donors will be invited to an annual Davidson Club event.

There are two ways to make a legacy gift to UBC Botanical Garden:

• by making a gift to any of the Endowments established to support the garden
• by leaving a deferred or estate gift or making a planned gift for the future

Endowment Giving

UBC Botanical Garden welcomes endowment gifts to secure future funding for research, education and community initiatives. Gifts can be made either to establish a new endowment or to augment existing endowments. Examples of previously endowed funds include:

• Alpine Garden
• Apprentice and Student Training
• Asian Garden
• BC Native Garden
• Food Garden
• Garden Maintenance
• Gerald Straley Memorial Fund
• Library
• Nitobe Memorial Garden
• Perennial Border
• Physic Garden
• Plant Acquisition
• Plant Development
• Publications
• Special Projects

Endowment gifts remain in the endoment permanently. The capital is not distributed. Annual revenue to the garden from endowments is approximately 5% of the gift. This annual revenue will support the garden in perpetuity.

Planned Giving Opportunities

There are many options for planned or deferred gifts, and include such possibilities as:

• Gifts-in-kind (such as a valuable collection of books, art or slides)
• Gifts of securities and shares
• Gifts of insurance (tax receipt is provided for your annual policy premiums)
• Creating a trust (no probate fees)
• Creating a legacy gift through your will

Serving Future Generations

UBC Centre for Plant Research researchers have an impact on our understanding of the natural world. Research into topics such as ethnobotany (e.g., appreciating the knowledge of a diversity of cultures to determine "new" treatments for disease) and plant evolution (e.g., understanding the relationships between plants to decipher how best to save a species from extinction) are two of the many areas in which UBC Centre for Plant Research scientists contribute to giving hope and promise to the future.
