Botanical Survey Technician Position

Summer Employment Opportunity

Job Description: A crew of summer field employees will conduct detailed botanical surveys on Sierra Pacific Industries’ timberlands under the supervision of a botany crew leader. Surveys may be conducted on multiple areas of the SPI ownership, so the Botanical Survey Technician must be willing to travel. The successful applicant will be able to work in remote field conditions and hike steep slopes over rocky ground. Technicians must also be willing to work full days surveying open ground in summer weather conditions.

Duties of the Botanical Survey Technician may include, but are not limited to:
• Plant identification of California flora to family, genus and species
• Measuring and recording topographic and geological characteristics of a site
• Surveying Timber Harvest Plan areas for rare plant species
• Measuring canopy using various instruments
• Navigating forest roads using a map

Qualifications:

Educational Requirements
• General Botany Course
• Plant Taxonomy
• General Biology
• Plant Ecology
• Experience with California Flora

Preferred Coursework
• Soil Science
• Geology
• Plant Physiology or Anatomy

Field Experience
• 1 season of botanical fieldwork desirable


Dates of Employment: Summer 2008, May-August or June-September

Base Location: Anderson, California or other California district office location.
This position will require overnight travel and work outside of the home-base area. Meals and lodging will be provided by SPI for employees when assigned to work from a location other than their base location.

Salary: Dependent on Experience and Qualifications
• Housing stipend may be available for qualified out of area applicants

Botany Seminar

Tuesday, December 4

Brandon Gaut, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology , Univ. of California, Irvine, will give a presentation entitled Population genetics, transposable elements and the molecular signature of local adaptation in Arabidopsis lyrata.

The seminar will be held in the Michael Smith Laboratories, Auditorium, 12:30 a.m.
