Botanical Survey Technicians
Sierra Pacific Industries, located in Anderson, California is seeking ten botanists to assist with surveys on SPI Industries' timberlands from May to August 2006. Requirements for applicants include completion of courses in general botany, plant taxonomy, general biology and plant ecology along with experience with California flora. Knowledge of plant physiology, geology and soil science preferred. Botanical fieldwork experience is desirable.
Job Description: A crew of summer field employees will conduct detailed botanical surveys on Sierra Pacific Industries’ timberlands under the supervision of a botany crew leader. Surveys may be conducted on multiple areas of the SPI ownership, so the Botanical Survey Technician must be willing to travel. The successful applicant will be able to work in remote field conditions and hike steep slopes over rocky ground. Technicians must also be willing to work full days surveying open ground in summer weather conditions.
Duties of the Botanical Survey Technician may include, but are not limited to;
- Plant identification of California flora to family, genus and species
- Measuring and recording topographic and geological characteristics of a site
- Surveying THP areas for rare plant species
- Measuring canopy using various instruments
- Navigating forest roads using a map
Base Location: Anderson, California or other California district office location. Meals and lodging will be provided by SPI if the employee is assigned to work from a location other than his or her base.
Salary: Depending on Experience. Housing stipend may be available for qualified out of area applicants.
