Personal Notes

The farm I grew up on in northwestern Ohio produced most of the food my family consumed. New food plants were experimented with in the garden each year. The origin and development of plants people use economically fascinates me. Of the estimated 300,000 edible plant species, only around 2500 have been eaten with regularity and less than 200 have entered into modern commerce. I enjoy studying how different cultures use plants and am always ready to try new foods.

Favourite Plants

I have planted Daphne odora everywhere I have lived. I like plants with rich fragrances and/or flavours. Jasminum spp., Fragaria spp. (strawberries), and Physalis spp. are also favourites.
