Brent Hine
Curator, E.H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden
Professional Biography
Brent Hine completed a horticultural apprenticeship at Humber College in Toronto in 1989 and returned to the west coast seeking meaningful employment with a botanical garden. He began at the UBC Botanical Garden in 1994 and became Curator of the E.H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden in 1997. He is currently focussed on developing research collections of chiefly herbaceous plants for potential use in research projects and renewing various components and habitats of the alpine garden. He is also building a digital image database of plants in the garden.
Personal Notes
Although born in southern Alberta, I grew up on the east coast of Vancouver Island, near the sea, in the rainshadow of Mt. Arrowsmith. In this “banana belt”, (BC Biogeoclimatic Coastal Douglas Fir Zone) I spent a good deal of time outdoors, exploring the local environment and learning about native flora, as well as cultivating a garden at home.
Currently, native plants continue to intrigue me as does local geology and history, and astronomy - essentially the study of light. These personal passions are shared with studying Japan and its culture; learning more about them all is my other life's work.
Favourite Plants
Where to begin? Perhaps Fabaceae, be it Robinia hispida, Lathyrus odoratus, Gymnocladus dioicus, any old Lupinus or many others, although there are several antipodean plants (and their habitats) that inhabit my imagination as well.
