February 25, 2007 : The Physic Garden Through the Years
Some historical photos of the garden.
These images come from a variety of sources including the always fascinating UBC Photo Archives. Many different gardeners have cared for the Physic Garden over the years. It has evolved wonderfully from the original plantings while remaining true to its 16th century European heritage, making it a favourite place for lots of people (including me). Be sure to look for a short book that we will be publishing this spring that will discuss the history of this garden along with profiles of some of its important medicinal plants.
EDIT: People have been asking if I could include the years for these photos. Here are some approximate dates starting with the top left and ending with the bottom right. (If you can help please post a comment.)

Please share your comments about the write-up and any accompanying photographs. Telling a story about the subject of the write-up is also much appreciated! If you have a gardening question, the best place to ask is on the UBC Botanical Garden Forums. Thank you!

UBC Botanical Garden Blog is a project of the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research, located in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. UBC BGCPR is a department within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at The University of British Columbia.

The second photograph (in black and white) features a young David Tarrant (see: http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/people/tarrant.php), and features a "push-me, pull-you" wheelchair especially adapted to get over difficult curbs in the garden. Over the last few years the UBC Botanical Garden has greatly improved conditions for wheelchair access - see for instance a previous post in this series: http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/gardenblog/2007/02/improving_accessibility_in_the_garden_1.php.
