Native Plant Workshops with Allison Luke
Overview: Join Allison Luke for mid-summer evenings at UBC Botanical Garden for studying native plants of the Pacific Northwest. This 3-part series is geared towards those who are new to native plants, eager to learn plant ID of the most common perennials, shrubs, and trees in this region, and how to increase biodiversity in your garden. Participants can register for one, or more sessions. Each session will focus on a different selection of plants in the garden and will fit nicely together for those that are interested in attending all three. Participants are limited to 14 people/session.
Dates:
Session 1: Thursday, July 20 5:30-8:00 pm
Session 2: Tuesday, July 25 5:30-8:00 pm
Session 3: Thursday, July 27 5:30-8:00 pm
Location: UBC Botanical Garden. We will explore the BC Rainforest Garden and Garry Oak Meadow and Woodland Garden
Cost: $40.00 per session
Course Content:
- Learn the names and key ID features of 30 of the most common perennials, shrubs, and trees native to the Pacific Northwest (10 plants/session)
- Understand which plants and trees are appropriate choices for urban garden settings
- Learn more about pollinator attracting plants in the Lower Mainland
- Additional content provided such as invasive species removal, reference list for nurseries & demonstration gardens and sample garden designs using native plants
Instructor Bio:
Allison Luke started out in horticulture in Victoria, The City of Gardens, in 2007 and has been in love with the industry ever since. Since moving to Vancouver, she has honed her skills at VanDusen Botanical Garden, Queen Elizabeth Park, worked as head gardener at The Arbutus Club, and has taught gardening courses at Burnaby Community & Continuing Education. She is the Principal Instructor of the Horticulture Training Program at UBC Botanical Garden.
