Food Garden
The favourite outdoor classroom of urban children
The Food Garden is a showcase of established and experimental varieties of vegetables, berries and fruit trees which grow well in this part of British Columbia and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Fuelled by the global resurgence of interest in organic food, nostalgia for backyard plots and a desire to grow their own, more and more visitors are drawn here. Fruit trees line both sides of the outer path, displaying small-space pruning and training techniques perfected over time.
Some ask UBC's friendly experts tending the garden for tips on pruning. Others visitors are drawn to the unexpected presence of Chinese gooseberries (Kiwi fruit) and other plants associated with more tropical climates and faraway regions. Raised beds, four feet wide, allow easy access and unobstructed viewing, especially for children.
Friends of the Garden continue to research and assess varieties of fruits and vegetables for planting in the garden and assist with picking and distribution of produce to local soup kitchens.
