Vaccinium cylindraceum is a superb flowering and fruiting shrub. Native to the Azores and given a USDA Hardiness Zone 10 (!) by the Royal Horticulture Society, the particular specimen in Daniel's photograph has been in the African section of the E.H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden at UBC Botanical Garden since 1983, so has weathered a number of extreme winters. Typically in leaf at least until past the winter solstice, this semi-evergreen hasn't shed all of its leaves for the last three or four years. It should be more widely known for its spectacular autumn colour, and attractive, long-lasting, tasty fruit.
