i have an indoor cyanea which i would like to seperate as it is getting to large for the container.does anyone know how this should be approached?also any info on the plant would help as i have none!

Cut rootstock apart and replant individually. Try a web search for "bromeliad propagation", "dividing bromeliads" etc.
