What is it?

I bought this plant several years ago in a department store in Michigan. No identification stake. A year or so later, I split the plant and gave the better half to a friend about 3-4 years ago. She has this plant (see pictures) in a south bay window. Oddly enough, for the first time it bloomed yesterday. The blooms are bright yellow. I have spent many hours on the internet over the years trying to find a picture of this plant and its name and care requirements, with nil results. Can anyone help? Both of us want to know. My friend has company over, and they say, "What is that?" The other half, which I have, is the lesser half and hardly grows.

Thank you!

This is great. Thank you so much. Google told me more about it, care, etc. You're great. We had thought maybe it was a cactus variety. This is a great website.
