Graphis scripta (lichen)

The pencil-like markings on this picture are actually a lichen growing on the bark of a red alder tree. The lichen is called Graphis scripta and is commonly known as hieroglyphics lichen or common script lichen.

This photo was taken at a park near Victoria, British Columbia in October 2002.
