Asphodel

It looks as if asphodels have never been featured in BPoD. This particular species (Asphodelus aestivus) is quite abundant at Serra dos Candeeiros in central Portugal, where both pictures were taken at the the end of July. Three to four species of Asphodelus are spontaneous in Portugal, and they are not at all easy to tell apart. Asphodelus aestivus is quite similar to Asphodelus ramosus (although a bit taller: it can reach 2 metres high) and has approximately the same distribution. However, as its name suggests, Asphodelus aestivus flowers in the summer, whereas A. ramosus is a spring-flowering species.
