My dying Jade

I am very unsure of what is going on, but I was told to water it about twice a month. It however got side tracked and usually it isn't a problem, because this jade was a huge plant that kept thriving no matter what. I moved from a home to an apartment and then the Jade plant started dying at a rapid pace. I went and checked on it again and some of the jade plant stems have rotted and when I broke off the rotted part there was fuzzy mold at the end. What did I do wrong. I also just watered it again. Some parts look like it is coming back, but my jade is not pretty like it used to be. I have some other jade plants that are growing prefectly fine and have never had this problem. What did I do wrong?

It was kept too wet. Is it getting as much sun in the new place as in the old? I ask because the less sun a plant has, usually the less water it needs (not ALWAYS, but usually).

It is getting less sun, because it is under a porch and I live down stairs. The house it was just under the hawning by the door. So it was great. I moved it out a little, but we are having rain. What shoud I do? Should I move it to where the rain won't hit it, but be in the light? Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like your jade has rot. Move it out of the rain and cut off all rotting parts. You will have to be very careful with watering and not let it sit in water.

Does that mean I need to replant it? If so what soil do I use?

Just let it dry out and give it the most, highest light you can. If your place is really dark/dull most of the time, you might consider giving it to a friend who has sunny windowsills because it really needs lots of sun all day long. I wouldn't repot yet until it's recovered (if it's going to) as it will only add to the stress. Jades don't need watering more than once a month (if that) in winter.

I agree with Rima. If the soil is soaking wet from watering and/or rain, I would usually recommend removing all soil and repotting, but you say your plant is huge. It might be a problem for you to repot it. Leaving it in very wet soil won't help either if you watered it recently.

I've found with succulents like jade, once it gets overwatered and root rot starts, there is often nothing you can do to save it.

I would also take cuttings from the healthy parts of the jade. Let them dry out a bit before planting them. And then put rooting hormone on the cut ends and plant into soil. Don't water until roots have formed. You can tell by lightly tugging on the cuttings. If they resist, chances are that you have roots. When I have done this, I only sparingly mist the soil, and I rarely do that until there are roots. make sure that it is getting a lot of sunshine. My gauge of whether or not my jades are getting enough is if the edges of the leaves are red. Red= enough sun. Good luck!!
