Gloxinia

About a month ago I received a gloxinia as a gift. It did very well at first and the blooms really held up. It has been humid, I have been keeping the soil moist and I have been feeding it regularly. But lately it is not doing as well. The leaves are perky and have kept their nice color, but the stalks and flowers turn brown and do not open. I have heard conflicting things about how much sun this plant needs. Right now it is in an west facing window. This may or may not be a part of the problem. I really can't think what else this plant may need. If anyone has any suggestions I would be more than happy to have them. Also, how should this plant be trimmed back?
Thanks,
Kate

Re: Gloxinia

I think your gloxinia has crown rot. it is from improper watering don't let the plant itself get wet, just the soil and don't let it stand in water. also, cut off all of the brown stalks immediately or you will lose the whole plant. gloxinias will need a rest period where it will not get water and the plant dies back. early spring start watering again. it can be a difficult plant, some just treat it as an annual.
