Care of contorted hazelnut

The following was received via BPotD:

Quote:
I just bought a contorted hazelnut in a nursery and I am looking forward to planting it. I live in California, and my soil is clay. It will get morning and noon sun.
What do I need to be aware of in caring for it.

I really love it. It is now 1-2/12 feet high.

First check Sunset WESTERN GARDEN BOOK to see if you are in a suitable area.

Re: Care of contorted hazelnut

I can't give you any advice on the clay soil, but the amount of sun should be OK. Mine is in full sun in zone 7/8. One thing you want to keep on top of is cutting off shoots that grow from the rootstock. These shoots will be straight, not contorted. They seem to pop up very quickly on mine, and grow rather fast too.
