Pony Tail needs help.

I adopted an 8 foot tall pont tail palm that was looking pretty sick from a local restaurant. The plant had mealy that had been treated but the folage is all but gone and the most recent new shhots are brown and dead. The base and the trunk feel solid (not soft) and it appears to be in a pot of suitable size. I'm tempted to cut a few inches of the top and see if it regenerates. I have moved it into my atruim which is southerly exposed, high light and this time of year at this latitude will hover around 60 - 65 degrees F.

Any ideas?

Jef
