Schefflera dying?

Greetings,
My Shcefflera has been losing alot of leaves lately. The leaves turn dark purple or brown then fall off.
I live in Central Ohio and the plant is kept indoors. The temperature is kept between 60 and 68 degrees F. (15-20C). 30-50% Humidity. Recently I cut back on the watering per instructions from a website that recommending "water when the soil is moist 2 inches under the surface."
The only other thing that could be affecting the plant is a cat that lacks a green thumb.

Any advice would be appreciated.
