Mimosa or not, how do I trim or prune it?

So, I have this mass promulgation of spindle-ee mimosa type tree/weed things all about my pool. I am wondering: Are these mimosa trees, and more importantly, how do I prune them, for they emit long spiderey leafless limbs (not all of them) in every direction, which results in a very unsavory visual, and invade otherwise ergonomic pedestrian thoroughfares within and without the pool area, however, I like them and hope they are something like crepe myrtle so that one could prune virtually the entire plant/tree thing back.
Also...
Is there a problem with doing this in the fall?
I am in the deep south - Semmes AL just outside Mobile.

It would really help to know what plant it is. Can you take a sample to a local nursery or post a picture so it can be idenified?
