Why is Rye as a Cover Crop an Effective Weed Killer?

More to rye as a weed suppressor than the obvious answers.

Yet another plant that produces substances to discourage competing plants, like walnut, eucalyptus, etc.

Why is someone named Cliff Rice working with Secale cereale rather than Oryza sativa??
