Lilacs in Vancouver

Lilacs are renowned for their opulent clusters of fragrant flowers, but in Vancouver, few lilacs perform well.

Most species are susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew and bacterial blight; the mild, moist maritime climate is to blame. Some exceptional species perform well here, however. For example, Syringa pubescens subsp. patula (Oleaceae), the Manchurian lilac, is a disease resistant, cold-hardy shrub known for its densely twiggy, domed habit and exquisitely fragrant flowers. 'Miss Kim' is the most common cultivar of the species in North American gardens. It was selected for its compact habit and lavender-blue flowers. The name honours the common Korean family name, Kim.
