Meconopsis

Meconopsis betonicifolia

Meconopsis is a small genus of Asian and European poppies, known primarily for its blue-flowered species, the Himalayan blue poppies.

Conditions in the David C. Lam Asian Garden are ideal for a number of Meconopsis, including Meconopsis grandis and Meconopsis betonicifolia, two species renowned for their intense sky-blue, crepe-like flowers. Both are alpine species that prefer cool conditions and moist, organic soil. Like most Papaveraceae, Meconopsis species are inter-fertile, so naturalized plants such as these are often hybrids; and while many species are monocarpic (flowering once, then dying), the hybrids are usually reliably perennial.
