Iris douglasiana

Iris douglasiana (Iridaceae) was first collected near Monterey, California by the Scottish botanist and explorer David Douglas.

Douglas iris grows on coastal bluffs or open grassy hillsides near the ocean from Santa Barbara, California to central Oregon. Ranchers consider it a noxious weed because it is unpalatable to livestock and in grazing land, can form large clumps (the largest of which may be hundreds of years old). A highly variable species with flowers that range from light blue to dark purple, it readily hybridizes with other species, especially in habitats disturbed by human activity.
