Hamamelis mollis
Hamamelis mollis, Chinese witch hazel, is a beautiful shrub that lights up the winter landscape and perfumes the air with its unmistakable sweet, spicy fragrance.
A similar species, Hamamelis japonica (Japanese witch hazel) is slightly later to flower with a less intense aroma. Cultivars of Hamamelis × intermedia (Hamamelis japonica × Hamamelis mollis) are commonly planted and exceptionally vigorous, with very showy, but faintly scented flowers. Hamamelis is not the only winter-flowering genus in Hamamelidaceae, but it is the most pleasantly scented; a number of hamamelids, such as Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood) are anemophilous (wind-pollinated), and thus, unscented, while others, including Disanthus cercidifolius, are myiophilous (fly-pollinated) and exceptionally foul smelling.
