Arbutus menziesii

Arbutus menziesii UBC-IS.93-43

Canada's only broadleaf evergreen tree, Arbutus menziesii (Pacific madrone) is native to the west coast of North America from Baja California to southern British Columbia.

Species in the genus Arbutus (Ericaceae) generally inhabit warm winter, dry summer (Mediterranean) climate areas in the Northern Hemisphere. In British Columbia, Arbutus only succeeds edaphically (i.e., on suitable soils). Survival under cool, wet winter conditions requires extraordinarily good soil drainage and a sunny site that is protected from drying winds. Such sites are rare in the Vancouver area, except on rocky or gravelly soils with a southern or western aspect in close proximity to the ocean.
