Special Lecture: Gardening with Arthritis (2008)

Have you dreamed of creating your own garden utopia but worried that your arthritis would slow you down? If so, The Arthritis Society has a workshop for you! The Gardening with Arthritis workshop is designed to educate participants about ways to enjoy this popular leisure activity without putting additional stress on their joints.

Special Program: Tai Chi In The Garden (2008)

Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday Evenings
Program Details: This class will introduce the popular Yang Style of T'ai Chi ("Taijiquan"), an internal art that is characterized by slow, continuous and gentle movements. The Yang Style is ideal for practitioners of all ages and abilities (beginners and intermediates). Strengthen your muscles, improve balance, increase flexibility and relieve stress by learning the graceful sequence of 108 postures in this long form of Yang Style. You will also be taught how to cultivate Qi for improved blood circulation, awareness and internal power.
Instructor: Michael Blackburn, a gifted and professional instructor with over a decade of teaching experience, who has studied and practiced with notable teachers in Canada, China, Taiwan, Japan and the US since 1987.
Location: In the Garden when daylight and weather permit, otherwise in the UBC Botanical Garden Reception Centre, 6804 South West Marine Drive. Vancouver, BC.
Cost: (General) $75 or (Garden Members) $70 (10 sessions, one each Thursday evening)

Christmas Tree Chipper Event (2007-2008)

Be sustainable - Chip-In!
After the holidays, drop off your undecorated Christmas tree at UBC Botanical Garden to be recycled into mulch for the Garden.
Date: Thursday December 27, 2007 to Sunday January 6, 2008
Time: 8:00am to 5:00pm daily
Location: UBC Botanical Garden parking lot, at 6804 South West Marine Dr.
Event Description: Drop off your clean, undecorated Christmas tree at the UBC Botanical Garden parking lot (follow on-site signs to drop off location), and your tree will be chipped into mulch for Garden paths instead of filling local landfills with this re-useable resource. Please remove all decorations, stands, bags and ropes. No yard trimmings, just Christmas trees. All dates and times are self-serve drop off with the exception of Saturday January 5, 2008 from 12:00pm to 2pm, when staff members will be available to assist.
Your help is mulch appreciated!

2007 December Holiday Hours

UBC Botanical Garden will be closed on the afternoon of Dec 23 to Dec 26 inclusive. It will reopen on December 27 until January 6th from 8am to 5pm, after which regular winter hours will resume.
Nitobe Memorial Garden will be closing on the afternoon of December 21 and reopening on the morning of January 2 with its regular winter hours.
The Shop in the Garden will be open until the afternoon of December 23. It will reopen on January 13 with its regular winter hours.

Apple Festival (2007)

The 17th annual Apple Festival is being held on October 13th and 14th from 11AM to 4PM on both days. Admission fee this year is $2.00 for adults with those under 18 free.
There will be over 50 varieties of apples to taste and to buy, as well as many varieties of apple trees for sale. Come early to ensure that you can buy your favourite apple, as many of the most popular varieties sell out quickly.
Once again, there will be a Longest Peel contest, with prizes being awarded for those who can peel the longest unbroken apple skin. There will also be a special game for children, allowing them to explore parts of the Garden on their way to the Children's Corner.

Community Earth Day Celebration (2007)

Spring has sprung at the UBC Botanical Garden and we are inviting the community to attend our free Earth Day Celebration on April 22nd from 11am to 3pm to mark the spring opening of the Garden. This event will feature a number of exciting educational activities for adults and children including:
- Family garden tours
- Magic show with the Solar Power Roadshow
- Scavenger hunt
- Pollination Street (crafts and activities for kids)
- Sustainable Expo (community education on organic gardening, commuting options, water and energy conservation, recycling and waste reduction, and composting)
Admission is free. Pre-registration is not required and all aspects of the event are on a first come first serve basis. A UBC Food Services BBQ will be on-site to serve delicious treats!

Join the sustainability wave and bring your clean, undecorated Christmas tree to the UBC Botanical Garden where it will be chipped into bark mulch for our pathways. From January 2nd to January 5th, drop your tree off from 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM. On January 6th & 7th, tree drop off is available from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Vancouver Mycological Society Mushroom Show

The Vancouver Mycological Society is holding a Mushroom Show on Sunday, October 22 at VanDusen Botanical Garden. The show runs from 11am until 4pm in VanDusen's Floral Hall, and features displays of edible, poisonous and dubious mushrooms along with demonstrations on the cultivation, preservation and cooking of gourmet varieties. Attendees are invited to bring mushroom and fungus specimens for identification. Admission $3.00, children under 12 free.

Lilacs Donated to the Dr. Peter Centre

On Mother's Day in 1990, Shirley Young received two beautiful lilac bushes from her son, Dr. Peter Jepson-Young, host of the CBC television series, Dr. Peter's Diaries. The doctor pioneered public education efforts about HIV-AIDS through the TV series until his death in 1992. The Dr. Peter Centre, named in honour of Dr. Jepson-Young, was founded shortly after his death. For the official opening of the centre in 2003, Mrs. Young had the idea to donate the lilac bushes she had received from her son.

TREEFEST at Riverview

The Riverview Horticultural Centre Society is presenting TREEFEST on Sunday September 18 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Henry Esson Young (HEY) Building at Riverview Hospital. Minotaur Unleashed!

The “Minotaur with Hare” by UK artist Sophie Ryder is on display at UBC Botanical Garden for 18 months as part of the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale: Open Spaces 2005/2006. Weighing 800kg and measuring 2.7m (7') tall, the minotaur will overlook a soon-to-be-constructed traditional turf maze, representing the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

Mythical Monster Arriving in UBC Botanical Garden!

Who, or rather what, will make this nondescript concrete pad under a Quercus robur its home for the next two years?
Time will tell - we're expecting the creature to arrive soon! We've had to navigate through a labyrinth of tasks to secure the monster, so we hope you'll appreciate the temporary visitor!
Update (July 15, 2005 12:00 PM PST): The truck delivering the creature has had some mechanical problems that are going to delay delivery by perhaps a week or more.

“Water has long been a problem in the drought-prone Columbia Valley. Despite large amounts of rain this year, it is anticipated that the months of July and August will see parched gardens and water restrictions. Simple water conservation techniques are useful for optimising water use while maintaining and enhancing gardens.
The College of the Rockies and the Columbia Valley Botanical Garden, with funding support from the Columbia Basin Trust, are holding a workshop on fire and waterwise landscaping at College of the Rockies Invermere Campus July 15-16. The workshop will comprise of an evening lecture and a field tour the following morning.”

Glacial erratic story

An independent newspaper serving the residents of UBC and surrounding area, the V6T News, includes an excellent article on the newly placed glacial erratic at UBC Botanical Garden. Well worth reading for the reminder that even though a botanical garden is widely cited as a collection of plants and landmark objects, it is also a collection of stories, in this case both personal and historical.

In Honour of Dr. Inazo Nitobe

As part of renovations at the Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) in Victoria, British Columbia, land adjacent to the Pemberton Memorial Chapel has been set aside for a garden to honour Dr. Inazo Nitobe (also honoured at UBC's Nitobe Memorial Garden), who died at RJH on October 15, 1933.

2) In accordance with Trek 2010, we believe that one of our greatest responsibilities is to serve the local and global communities. We do this through the activities we perform and the services we provide. The botanical garden is used not only for amenity, but also for basic and applied research, for academic learning, for communicating the research and academic missions of the university to the general public, for lifelong learning, for community outreach and for engendering appreciation and stewardship of the natural world.

The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed

“The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed” is a newly released book by Vancouver author John Vaillant. The tale weaves the story of the people and circumstances leading to the 1997 felling of the golden spruce near Port Clements in the Queen Charlotte Islands, the disappearance of the man who cut down the tree and the repercussions in the local communities.
John Vaillant will be lecturing on the golden spruce and his book on Thursday, May 12 (7:30pm to 9pm) as part of UBC's Talk of the Town lecture series. The free public lectures are held at the UBC Robson Square campus in downtown Vancouver. Although the lecture is free, pre-registration is requested (604-822-5675 or info.talkofthetown@ubc.ca) to ensure that the audience can be properly accomodated.

Lichen Monitoring Project in Vancouver

Volunteers are needed for a Community Lichen Monitoring project in the Greater Vancouver Area sponsored by Environment Canada's EMAN (Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network). The project will survey lichen communities around Vancouver to use as indicators to characterize air quality.

Vancouver Food Policy Council Elected

On July 15, representatives from a diverse group of food-related organizations elected members of Vancouver's new Food Policy Council. The 20-member council will develop policy recommendations on food-related issues in the municipal area. A broad range of interrelated issues will be addressed by the council, including food distribution and security, ensuring quality food sources for low income residents, promoting community kitchens, fostering local farm production, and creating new community garden plots and rooftop gardens.

Local Thieves Haul Off Trees

Replacing Poisoned Trees

A Vancouver resident has launched a campaign to replace poisoned trees on Vancouver's West Side. Tests have revealed that the poisoning was done with an herbicide that is only available in the United States.

Ames True Temper has issued a public safety recall of wheelbarrows manufactured under the O. Ames brand between 1993 and 2000. The fourteen inch wheels of these wheelbarrows have black plastic wheel assemblies which can fracture when the tires are inflated, causing injury.

Ivy Busters

The Stanley Park Ecological Society and Vancouver Parks Board are seeking volunteers to help control the invasion of English ivy in Stanley Park. English ivy (Hedera helix) can now be found in approximately a third of the park's six hundred acres.

BC Environmental Groups Feel Funding Pinch

The Friends of Government House Gardens will be hosting tours of the Government House in Victoria, British Columbia from April 21 to October 3, 2004. Government House, the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of BC, is known as “The Ceremonial Home of All British Columbians”.

Crystal Garden Conservation Centre

Originally built in 1925 as a tropical garden and indoor swimming pool, the Crystal Garden has housed the Crystal Garden Conservation Centre since 1980. The CGCC has several mandates: it participates in international programs to preserve rare and endangered flora and fauna; it works to educate and inform the public about global conservation issues; and it serves to inspire and stir the imagination of young and old. It is slated to permanently close on September 7, 2004.

The Canadian Peony Society - Pacific Region

Great Grey Owl at UBC

A great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) has been haunting the campus at UBC. Local birdwatching enthusiasts have been observing the owl in Vancouver since the middle of December, first at Stanley Park, then Jericho Beach and now on the UBC campus.

Burns Bog - Finally Preserved?

The Federal Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Corporation of Delta are each contributing to an offer of $78.7 million CDN to acquire 5426 acres (2196 hectares) of land to protect and preserve Burns Bog.
