Boootiful Botany Haunted Halloween Event (2008)

Location: Throughout the grounds of UBC Botanical Garden, 6804 South West Marine Drive, Vancouver.
Organizer: The Education and Outreach Office at UBC Botanical Garden
Admission: Free Community Event
Description: This exciting event will begin with a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt where parents and children can work together to find a number of spooky plant stops in the garden. At each plant stop, they'll learn some weird or unusual facts and stories about plants while receiving Halloween treats. Following the scavenger hunt, parents and children can enjoy Halloween crafts and games.
Don't forget to wear your costume!
Please Note: This event will occur rain or shine. Dogs are not permitted in UBC Botanical Garden. If you'd like to facilitate the continuation of free community events at UBC Botanical Garden, donations are graciously accepted towards the Education and Outreach Program. Admission to the Garden is by donation on the day of this event. Please contact 604-827-4536 for more information. Pre-registration is not required and all aspects of the event are on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is limited parking on-site. Additional parking may be available on Old Marine Road or metered parking along East Mall, the Thunderbird Parkade and Thunderbird Stadium.
The C20 transit shuttle runs from the campus bus-loop to the Garden at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour, while the #41, 43 and 49 buses stop along 16th Avenue, one block south of the Garden. For more details about transit options, including information about cycling routes, please visit UBC Trek.

Vancouver Mycological Society Mushroom Show

The Vancouver Mycological Society is holding a Mushroom Show on Sunday, October 22 at VanDusen Botanical Garden. The show runs from 11am until 4pm in VanDusen's Floral Hall, and features displays of edible, poisonous and dubious mushrooms along with demonstrations on the cultivation, preservation and cooking of gourmet varieties. Attendees are invited to bring mushroom and fungus specimens for identification. Admission $3.00, children under 12 free.

East Van Tour of Private Gardens

Calling all gardeners! Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 18th, 2006, the date of the 13th annual tour of private gardens in East Vancouver. This one-day tour (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) begins at Figaro’s Garden Centre (3rd Ave & Victoria Drive) and costs a reasonable $10 per person.
The tour is self-directed. Participants pick up a map of this year’s gardens at Figaro’s beginning at 9:30 a.m. The gardens in the tour are as varied as the gardeners: small or large, neat as a pin or wild as the wind, funky or formal, and there’s a wealth of great ideas and inspiration to take away for your own garden.
The East Van Tour of Private Gardens is co-sponsored by Britannia Community Centre and Figaro’s Garden Centre. Tickets are available from Britannia (604-718-5800) or Figaro’s (604-253-1696).

Vancouver Orchid Society Show and Sale (2006)

Vancouver Orchid Society will be presenting their 29th annual orchid show and sale on April 28, 29 and 30, 2006 at the Richmond Curling Rink, 5540 Hollybridge Way in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. An event not to be missed for orchid enthusiasts, it is Western Canada's Largest Orchid Show. Hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday the 29th and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Sunday the 30th. General Admission is $7.00. An opening gala and preview event will be held Friday evening at 7:00. The Healing Power of Plants

The Vancouver Hardy Plant Group welcomes Timothy Walker, superintendent of Oxford Botanic Garden, for a lecture titled The Healing Power of Plants on February 8 at 8 pm at H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, 1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver. Mr. Walker describes his lecture; " Humankind has exploited the medicinal properties of plants for centuries, yet the role of plants in modern medicine is still considered to be peripheral by many people. This thought provoking seminar attempts to put the record straight, demonstrating how plant products are used every day by all of us to relieve pain and suffering, to heal wounds and cure disease and the essential role that plants play in our general well being."

Engaging the Public in Conservation

A colloquium to discuss ways to educate the public on conservation issues is being planned for April 12th and 14th at VanDusen and April 13th at UBC. Beth Brierley, Education Director for VanDusen Botanical Garden Association writes, “The focus of the conference will be on sharing ideas/good practice, grass-root implementation and development of new and innovative education programs.”

Dr. John Hodges Lecture on Sustainable Agriculture

Noted author and speaker on agricultural trends, Dr. John Hodges will present a lecture titled, Sustainable Agriculture and Food are now at Risk at events in Vancouver, Victoria and Abbotsford, sponsored by the Vancouver branch of the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists and the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems. The presentations will be open to BCIA members, students and the general public. Fees are $10, $5 for students and $15 at the door.

David Suzuki - Why Biodiversity Matters in a Changing World

How did life diversify? What are the ecological interconnections in biodiversity? How does biodiversity matter to us? And, one of today's most pressing questions, how much biodiversity can we afford to lose?
David Suzuki will present a lecture titled, Why biodiversity matters in a changing world on October 13 at 7:00 pm at the UBC Life Sciences Centre – West Atrium – 2350 Health Sciences Mall. This is the inaugural public lecture in a series being presented by the Beaty Museum of Natural History of the UBC Biodiversity Research Centre.

TREEFEST at Riverview

The Riverview Horticultural Centre Society is presenting TREEFEST on Sunday September 18 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Henry Esson Young (HEY) Building at Riverview Hospital. The event will offer tours of the grounds, featuring the historic trees planted at the site when it was originally developed as Essondale (the forerunner of the UBC Botanical Garden). Minotaur Unleashed!

The “Minotaur with Hare” by UK artist Sophie Ryder is on display at UBC Botanical Garden for 18 months as part of the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale: Open Spaces 2005/2006. Weighing 800kg and measuring 2.7m (7') tall, the minotaur will overlook a soon-to-be-constructed traditional turf maze, representing the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

“Water has long been a problem in the drought-prone Columbia Valley. Despite large amounts of rain this year, it is anticipated that the months of July and August will see parched gardens and water restrictions. Simple water conservation techniques are useful for optimising water use while maintaining and enhancing gardens.
The College of the Rockies and the Columbia Valley Botanical Garden, with funding support from the Columbia Basin Trust, are holding a workshop on fire and waterwise landscaping at College of the Rockies Invermere Campus July 15-16. The workshop will comprise of an evening lecture and a field tour the following morning.”

VanDusen Garden Show

The 11th annual VanDusen Garden show takes place from June 10-13, 2004. “Garden Tales - Gardens From Literature” is this year's theme, with designs from stories such as Alice in Wonderland and The Lord of the Rings. With over 250 exhibitors and 15 theme and feature gardens, the garden show is one of the largest in North America.
