On Mother's Day in 1990, Shirley Young received two beautiful lilac bushes from her son, Dr. Peter Jepson-Young, host of the CBC television series, Dr. Peter's Diaries. The doctor pioneered public education efforts about HIV-AIDS through the TV series until his death in 1992. The Dr. Peter Centre, named in honour of Dr. Jepson-Young, was founded shortly after his death. For the official opening of the centre in 2003, Mrs. Young had the idea to donate the lilac bushes she had received from her son.

David Suzuki - Why Biodiversity Matters in a Changing World

How did life diversify? What are the ecological interconnections in biodiversity? How does biodiversity matter to us? And, one of today's most pressing questions, how much biodiversity can we afford to lose?

David Suzuki will present a lecture titled, Why biodiversity matters in a changing world on October 13 at 7:00 pm at the UBC Life Sciences Centre – West Atrium – 2350 Health Sciences Mall. This is the inaugural public lecture in a series being presented by the Beaty Museum of Natural History of the UBC Biodiversity Research Centre.
