Government House Garden 2004 tours

The Friends of Government House Gardens will be hosting tours of the Government House in Victoria, British Columbia from April 21 to October 3, 2004. Government House, the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of BC, is known as “The Ceremonial Home of All British Columbians”.

Crystal Garden Conservation Centre

Originally built in 1925 as a tropical garden and indoor swimming pool, the Crystal Garden has housed the Crystal Garden Conservation Centre since 1980. The CGCC has several mandates: it participates in international programs to preserve rare and endangered flora and fauna; it works to educate and inform the public about global conservation issues; and it serves to inspire and stir the imagination of young and old. It is slated to permanently close on September 7, 2004.

Collectors' Plant Auction (2004)

The UBC Friends of the Garden are hosting a gala evening and plant auction on April 21, 2004 at 6:30pm in the Roundhouse Community Centre (False Creek, Vancouver).

Only 300 tickets are available at $125 each (partial tax rebates will be issued). Attendees will have the opportunity to acquire rare and specimen plants while enjoying a host bar, delectable fare and good humour.

Pacific Northwest Native Plant Sale (2004)

Native plants are ideally suited for Pacific Northwest gardens. Find a wide selection, direct from nurseries, at this year's Native Plant Sale on April 17 from 11am to 3pm at the garden.

Over 250 species native to the coastal northwest will be available. Native plant experts are on site, giving gardening advice and garden tours. Visit one of the many demonstration booths by local native plant and ecological organizations.

David Tarrant, UBC Botanical Garden's Programs and Public Relations Coordinator and long-time host of CBC's Canadian Gardener, returns to television with a series entitled “Spring”, beginning March 20 on HGTV Canada.

The series follows David as he travels around the world in search of spring, from Chile to Tasmania, from South Africa to Vancouver Island, from Greece to Newfoundland and 7 other global destinations.

Summer Student Jobs (2004)

Five summer student positions are available for the summer of 2004.

Students are hired for available summer positions at the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research based on the following criteria:

• employment is limited to returning first, second and third year students enrolled in a recognized Agriculture, Botany, Horticulture or Plant Biology program at UBC or another university/college, and to returning UBC Masters of Landscape Architecture students
• preference will be given to UBC students, and to students who have not had previous summer employment at the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research
• the term of employment is generally May to August
