BC Environmental Groups Feel Funding Pinch

During the stock market boom of the 1990s, tens of millions of dollars (much of it from the US) poured into British Columbian environmental groups. Donations have since dropped drastically, threatening the survival of many groups.

After September 11, 2001 and the stock market decline, charitable donations have dwindled. Governments, in response to their own fiscal deficits, have also cut funding for projects to non-profits and have sought to transfer some tasks, such as environmental monitoring, to non-profit agencies.

Environmental non-profit groups are now spending more time on fund-raising activities, hobbling efforts in education, conservation and advocacy.
