Magnolia season begins

Magnolia sargentiana var. robusta is starting to blossom.

Always the first magnolia to flower at UBC Botanical Garden every year, it signals the beginning of a 4 to 6 week period where many (but not all) of the garden's magnolias will display their impressive blooms. Last year, this particular plant precociously flowered around 10 days earlier, due at least in part to a very mild winter. This past winter had a cold spell, but this year the plant is still flowering three weeks earlier than 2002.
