Apple Festival 2009!

Category(-ies): 2009 Archives , Apple Festival

The 19th annual Apple Festival is being held on October 17th and 18th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. A $2.00 admission fee for adults helps support new garden initiatives -- for those under 12, admission is free.

As in past years, there will be over fifty varieties of apples to taste and purchase, as well as many varieties of apple trees for sale. Come early to ensure that you can buy your favourite apples, as many of the most popular varieties sell out quickly.

The BC Fruit Testers Association will have a display of over one hundred apple varieties in the Reception Centre, along with a cider press display, mason bee display and an apple identification table (bring along 6 apples from your tree if you'd like the variety to be identified). CFIA will have information on apple diseases.

Once again, there will be a Longest Peel contest, with prizes being awarded for those who can peel the longest unbroken apple skin.

The childrens' area will be back from last year -- a "Johnny Appleseed" orchard with six activity stations.

Free UBC Botanical Garden tours will be given, as well as short tours of the Alpine Garden area. If you've not visited the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, a special Apple Fest rate will be available.

Nine food vendors, selling everything from candied apples to pickles, sauces, chutneys and, of course, apple chips will be on-site, as well as the Friends of the Garden sales of apple pies and hot apple cider. Also, UBC Farm will be selling their UBC-grown produce. Craft vendors will also be present.

Also available will be tours of the UBC Farm Heritage Orchard. The Orchard was designed, grafted and planted as a student Directed Studies project beginning in 2005. A sanctuary for apple culture, the orchard is composed of 138 trees, including 60 varieties of apples and a handful of plums. Come visit this urban agricultural gem for tours on Saturday October 17 at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. at the UBC Farm! Unfortunately shuttle service to the farm is not available this year, but bicycles, foot and car traffic are welcome.

Category(-ies): Botanical Garden News , Front Page News , Local Interest

Courtesy of the UBC TREK Program Centre:

TransLink's Community Shuttles are minibuses that fit well into communities, providing more service, connecting neighbourhoods and linking with the regional transit network.

"There are 3 community shuttle routes at UBC. C19 goes from Alma and Broadway along NW Marine to UBC. C20 covers destinations and residences on the west side of campus including Totem Park, the Botanical Gardens, Nitobe Gardens, the Museum of Anthropology and the Chan Centre. C22 serves residents on the east side of campus, e.g. Hampton Place and Fairview/Acadia."

To get to UBC Botanical Garden via public transit, take a bus to UBC and then board the C20, which stops outside of the Student Recreation Centre on Student Union Boulevard next to the diesel bus loop. The C20 runs throughout the day until midnight with service commencing at 7:15 am during weekdays and at 9:15 am and 10:15 am on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Note that the bus runs every 20 minutes during most of the day so be sure to check the schedule.
